Kid-Friendly Modern

How can a 1968 house that served a family for over 50 years be reimagined to serve its new owners for 50 more? That’s the question our clients posed when they approached us about this remodel and addition in the heart of Northwest Hills.

The lot’s gorgeous, mature trees set the tone for this remodel, but they also came with constraints. Expanding outward wasn’t an option, so we turned our focus inward and upward. Within the existing footprint, walls were reimagined to create flow, while a brand-new second story gave the home room to grow.

Square footage was reimagined, not just added — every inch has intention.

The former formal living and dining areas became a bright, modern heart of the home: a kitchen overlooking the backyard, anchored by a 20-foot panoramic door.

Inside the primary suite, space was carefully reallocated. A small bedroom was folded into the layout to allow for a larger bedroom and an all-new closet. The original closet and bathroom were merged into a spacious retreat, complete with a curbless wet room and abundant natural light. Secondary bedrooms were subtly reshaped, their layouts refined and windows expanded to invite more daylight in.

Upstairs, the new addition balances function with lifestyle. A guest suite, wet bar, flex space, and office all orbit a design centered on openness and light. In the office, soaring windows and a private balcony transform work-from-home into something uplifting, while a custom desk conceals a hidden bed instantly converting the room into another guest suite when needed.

Everything has its place in this home. Especially the owners.

Project Description

The gorgeous trees on the lot prevented us from adding onto the first floor,

so we focused on reconfiguring walls within the existing footprint and adding a second story. The formal living and dining areas became the staircase and a kitchen looking out to the backyard, framed by a 20’ panoramic door.

Square footage from a small bedroom was reallocated to the primary suite for a larger bedroom and a new closet.

The old closet and bathroom were merged to create a large bathroom with a curbless wet room and a bounty of natural light. The remaining bedrooms were slightly rearranged to maximize the space and enlarge their windows for more natural light.‍

The upstairs addition contains a guest suite, wet bar, flex area, and office, all surrounded by windows that flood the first floor with light. In the office, soaring windows and a private balcony keep the work-from-home doldrums at bay, and a bed hidden within the desk quickly transforms the space into another guest bedroom if needed.
